On a crisp evening in December 2024, I had the privilege of attending and serving as the event photographer for the 2nd Annual Rocena Kidney Foundation Gala. Hosted at an elegant venue, the gala was a celebration of community, awareness, and the critical mission of supporting kidney health initiatives. As a photographer, I was there to capture moments of connection and purpose, but I also walked away inspired by the knowledge shared by the keynote speakers, Dr. Swapnil Hiremath and Daniel Afram.

Kidney Health: A Vital Conversation

Kidney health often doesn't get the spotlight it deserves, despite its vital role in maintaining our overall well-being. Dr. Swapnil Hiremath, a nephrologist and dedicated advocate for patient-centered kidney care, emphasized this point in his address. He spoke passionately about the rising prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the importance of early detection. With nearly one in ten Canadians affected by CKD, many of whom remain undiagnosed, Dr. Hiremath highlighted the urgent need for greater public awareness and regular screenings.

Daniel Afram, a social worker with a Master of Social Work (MSW) and Registered Social Worker (RSW) designation, brought a unique perspective to the conversation. Drawing on his extensive experience supporting vulnerable populations, he emphasized the importance of addressing the social determinants of health that disproportionately affect marginalized communities. He highlighted the unique challenges faced by individuals from African and Caribbean communities, who are at higher risk for conditions like hypertension and diabetes, key contributors to kidney disease. His focus on holistic care and community support added depth to the evening’s discussions.

Stories That Need to Be Told

Throughout the evening, I had the opportunity to meet incredible individuals—patients, caregivers, and advocates—whose lives have been touched by kidney health issues. Their resilience and determination to raise awareness were deeply moving. As someone who tells stories through a lens, I was struck by the richness of these narratives and the importance of giving them a platform. Whether it’s the journey of a transplant recipient or the dedication of a caregiver, these stories deserve to be shared.

I was honoured to collaborate with the guests at the gala. Capturing the spirit of the evening—the laughter, the heartfelt conversations, and the moments of reflection—was a privilege. I would love to continue this collaboration in the years to come, and I hope to play a part in amplifying the voices of those with personal experiences in kidney health, particularly from African and Caribbean communities.
