On December 14, 2024, the Hampton Inn and Suites in Ottawa was abuzz with celebration as Black Nurses Ottawa (BNO) hosted its First Annual Gala. This unforgettable event honoured the significant contributions of Black nurses to the healthcare field and their unwavering support for one another.

The Mission and Vision of Black Nurses Ottawa

Founded by Patricia Ogban, BNO is dedicated to fostering a community where Black nurses can connect, share experiences, and uplift each other. Ogban reflected on her motivation to start the group, stating, "I was looking for a community of people like me who understood the struggles I was facing." She and her husband emphasized systemic issues such as the lack of representation in leadership roles and challenges in addressing workplace expectations, which many Black nurses encounter daily.

A Night to Remember: Unity, Culture, and Celebration

The gala was a vibrant celebration of African heritage, bringing together nurses from Ottawa, Toronto, and beyond. Attendees enjoyed delicious food, engaging entertainment, and inspiring speeches that highlighted the strength and unity of Black healthcare professionals.
